Endocrinology

What is endocrinology?
Endocrinology is a branch of internal medicine that focuses on the endocrine system, specifically endocrine glands and the hormonal mechanisms they regulate.
Examples of medical conditions caused by endocrine system dysfunction include thyroid diseases, diabetes, Addison's disease, hypogonadism, growth disorders, and many others.
Endocrine system and hormones: what are their functions?
The endocrine system comprises all the endocrine glands in our body—namely, glands capable of producing hormones. Hormones are biochemical substances that carry a signal through the bloodstream from one cell to another cell, tissue, or organ, in order to trigger a specific functional response.
The endocrine system is fundamentally important throughout our entire lives: it regulates growth, metabolism, sexual development, digestion, mood, stress response, and the sleep-wake cycle.
The major endocrine glands are:
    • the hypothalamus – it secretes the hormones required to interact with and stimulate the adjacent pituitary gland. It is situated below the thalamus;
    • the pituitary gland– of paramount importance as, stimulated by the hypothalamus, it secretes 9 distinct hormones: growth hormone, thyrotropin, adrenocorticotropin, prolactin, gonadotropins, melanotropin, oxytocin, and antidiuretic hormone;
    • the thyroid gland– located at the base of the neck, it produces 3 hormones: thyroxine, triiodothyronine, and calcitonin;
    • the pineal gland – it secretes melatonin, which regulates the circadian sleep-wake cycle;
    • the pancreas – an integral part of the digestive system that secretes the hormones insulin, glucagon, and pancreatic polypeptide;
    • the adrenal glands – located superior to the kidneys, they are responsible for secreting adrenaline, cortisol, noradrenaline, and aldosterone;
    • the gonads – corresponding to the ovaries in females and the testes in males, they produce gametes and sex hormones.

Endocrinology: what conditions does it treat?
Through a painless, non-invasive endocrinological consultation, it is possible to identify, evaluate, and promptly manage issues related to potential hormonal imbalances.
Indeed, endocrinology addresses all types of hormonal disorders, including:
    • diabetes mellitus – a metabolic disorder caused by a decrease in the activity or production of the hormone insulin, synthesized by the pancreas;
    • growth disorders – dwarfism and gigantism represent the two main categories of growth-related pathologies; the former describes statural growth deficits, while the latter involves excessive statural development;
    • thyroid diseases – the most common and well-known include hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, thyroiditis, thyroid nodules, and goiter;
    • infertility issues due to hypogonadism – hypogonadism denotes reduced functional activity of the gonads, which are tasked with producing gametes and sex hormones;
    • menopausal disorders – menopause is a physiological condition marked by profound hormonal fluctuations; an endocrinological assessment is recommended both for severe symptoms and in cases of premature menopause (occurring before the age of 40);
    • precocious or early puberty – defined as precocious puberty when secondary sexual characteristics develop before age 9 in boys and age 8 in girls;
    • dyslipidemia disorders – lipid profile abnormalities can lead to elevated blood cortisol levels, an essential component in steroid hormone synthesis.

Many other pathologies can be promptly diagnosed and managed through an endocrinological consultation.
